Szczepanski Obituary Notices

1931 Martin Szczepanski obit 1938 Anna Szczepanski obitThe Attica News ran these obituaries for Martin Szczepanski and  and Anna Kalinowski Szczepanski after their deaths in 1931 and 1938.

Martha Szczepanski Klein is not listed in her father’s obituary notice, for some reason. Perhaps she provided information about her brothers and sisters, and her own name was overlooked. I had not known, or did not remember, that Martin Szczepanski had a brother Barney in Germany. That makes three generations of Bernards: Martin’s brother, Martin’s son Bernard, also called Barney Szczepanski, and Martin’s grandson, Bernard Maciejewski, who was called Ben.

Also interesting is the couple’s identified countries of origin, with Martin being identified as German in 1931 and Anna from Poland in 1938. Their granddaughter said that Martin spoke German, Polish, and English, while Anna spoke Polish and some English. There was no Poland in the 19th century, so they were actually born in Prussia, the part of Poland that was administered by Germany.
