Family of Łukasz Jankowski and Anastazja Małecka

My grandparents Antoni and Marya Maciejewski were the witnesses for the marriage of Antoni‘s brother Ludwik Maciejewski and Marta Jankowska at St. John Kanty Church in Buffalo, Erie, New York on Valentine’s Day 1916.

Ludwik was the son of Jan Maciejewski and Weronika Lewandowska. Marta was the daughter of Łukasz Jankowski and Anastazja Małecka. Both Ludwik and Marta were born in Buffalo.

The couple grew up next door to one another on Goodyear Avenue in Buffalo.

Marta‘s parents Łukasz Jankowski and Anastazja Małecka were married 12 Jan 1892 at St. Stanislaus Bishop and Martyr Church in Buffalo, New York.

Łukasz Jankowski, the son of Jakób Jankowski and Petronella Musiał, was born in Kaźmierz, Posen. Once part of the German occupied Prussian area of Posen, today Kaźmierz is a village in Szamotuły County, Wielkopolska (Greater Poland). He immigrated with his parents and siblings on the ship Rugia from Hamburg, arriving in New York, New York on 16 Apr 1888.

Anastazja Małecka, the daughter of the deceased (+) Walenty Małecki and his wife (żona) Marcyanna, was born in Słupca in the Russian occupied part of Poland. She reported arriving in the United States in 1890 or 1891.

There are places named Słupca in both Wielkopolska (Greater Poland) and the Masovian Voivodeship in Poland. The former Słupca was Prussian after the second partition of Poland, but the borders changed. Słupca was both a town and a county in Russian Poland when Anastazja was born.

The spelling of Anastazja‘s last name is not certain. The family names Małecki and Malecki are both found in Poland, although Małecki is the name used by more people.

Although the families do not appear to be related, there is another family connection with the name Malecki. For decades, Louis‘ sister Anna Maciejewska/Mack was the bookkeeper/office manager for Joseph Malecki of Malecki’s Meats in Buffalo, New York. Józef Malecki was born in 1893 in Opatówek, Kalisz, Wielkopolska, Russian Poland, and arrived in the United States in 1912.

• Bronisław JANKOWSKI, born 12 Dec 1892, Buffalo, Erie, New York; called Bruno, he may have married Catherine VOGEL, 9 Nov 1915, Buffalo, Erie, New York and died 13 May 1918, Buffalo, Erie, New York.
• Leon JANKOWSKI was born on 28 Aug 1894 in Buffalo, Erie, New York; he died 27 May 1920 at the age of 25 in Ossining, Westchester, New York.
• Marta JANKOWSKA, born 18 Jul 1896, Buffalo, Erie, New York; married Ludwik Jan MACIEJEWSKI, 14 Feb 1916, Buffalo, Erie, New York; married Jan Wojciech MAŁYSZKA, 2 Mar 1957, Buffalo, Erie, New York; she died 12 Jul 1959, Buffalo, Erie, New York.
• Józef JANKOWSKI was born on 6 Mar 1898 in Buffalo, Erie, New York; he died 6 Apr 1964, Buffalo, Erie, New York.
• Helena JANKOWSKA, born 1902, Buffalo, Erie, New York; married Louis HINKOFER, 26 Jun 1928, Buffalo, Erie, New York; she died 21 Jan 1942, Buffalo, Erie, New York.
• Teodor JANKOWSKI, born 24 Nov 1907, Buffalo, Erie, New York; married Helena KASPRZYK, 6 Aug 1930, Buffalo, Erie, New York; he died 4 May 1989.

A death notice was placed in the Buffalo Polish newspaper Dziennik Dla Wsystkich when Łukasz Jankowski died in 1931.

On Monday, April 27th, 1931, at 11:30, he left this world after having received the sacraments.

The late Łukasz was born in Poland. He came to America 40 years ago. He belonged to the Polish National Alliance Number 168, and the Association of Polish Craftsmen. He was 60 years old.

Funeral services will be on Thursday, April 30th at 10 in the morning from the house of mourning on 131 Goodyear Ave. to St. Luke’s Church, and afterwards to St. Stanislaus Bishop & Martyr Cemetery.

When Anastazja Jankowska died in 1935, a death notice was placed in the Buffalo Polish newspaper Dziennik Dla Wsystkich.

On Saturday morning, October 12th, 1935, she left this world after having received the sacraments.

Funeral services will be on Tuesday, October 15th at 9:30 in the morning from the house of mourning on 372 Koons Ave. to St. Luke’s Church at 10:00, and afterwards to St. Stanislaus Bishop & Martyr Cemetery to the family plot.

Łukasz and Anastazya Jankowski were buried in Section AA of St. Stanislaus Bishop and Martyr Cemetery in Cheektowaga, Erie, New York. Matka is the Polish word for mother, while ojciec means father.

Ur. is an abbreviation for urodzony, born, and um. is umarł, for the date of death. Kwiecić is the Polish verb “to bloom.” Kwiecień is the Polish word for the month of April, and kwietniowy is the adjective form. Październik is the month of October. The name is derived from paździerze, ‘chaff’ or ‘tow’, the fiber removed while processing flax or hemp, usually done in October.
