Duma DNA Cousins

For my birthday in 2020, my daughter and son-in-law gave me a 23andMe DNA kit. I spit in the tube, mailed it in, and eagerly awaited the results. Although I had previously tested my DNA with Ancestry.com in 2015, and uploaded my results to FamilyTreeDNA and MyHeritage, I was looking forward to new DNA matches, what 23andMe calls “Relatives in Common.”

One of my more interesting DNA Relatives, RD, with whom I shared 0.42% (31 centiMorgans) of DNA, identified his grandparents’ birthplaces as Koprzywnica, Sandomierz County, Świętokrzyskie Voivodeship, Poland. This was the place where my grandmother Agnieszka Kapuścińska was baptized in 1895!

I recognized two of RD and my “Relatives in Common”–JH and TM–as descendants of my grandmother’s sister Marianna Kapuścińska Mastykarz. Another of our relatives in common–CK–was a descendant of my grandmother’s cousin Marianna Witoń Solowska.

Jadwiga Duma Witoń

I knew CK growing up in Buffalo, New York. Both of my maternal grandparents had relatives who married into her Wronski family and we would get together for family events. A few years ago, CK‘s brother EW and I matched DNA on Ancestry.com, along with several other cousins. CK and EW‘s grandmother Maryanna Witoń Solowska was born in 1893, the daughter of Michał Witoń and Jadwiga Duma. According to Michał and Jadwiga‘s marriage record in 1888, Jadwiga was the daughter of the late Wawrzyniec Duma and Wiktoria Siudak.

Our grandmothers were cousins, our mothers second cousins, and CK and I are third cousins.

Marianna Duma Lis

RD matched CK more closely than I did. 23andMe reported they shared 1.12% (84 centiMorgans) of DNA. RD and I did some research, and we learned that RD‘s great-grandmother was Marianna Duma, who married Franciszek Lis in Koprzywnica on 10 February 1885. Franciszek Lis was the godfather for the baptism of Michał Witoń and Jadwiga Duma‘s daughter Marianna Witoń in 1893.

The marriage record of Franciszek Lis and Marianna Duma is written in Cyrillic, because Koprzywnica, Sandomierz was in the Radom gubernia of Congress Poland that was controlled by Russia in 1885.

Took place in the town Koprzywnica on January 29th/February 10th, 1885 at 10 o’clock in the morning. We announce that today in the presence of witnesses Kasir Palkin, 42 years old, and Jakób Rozwadowski, 42 years old, both peasants living in the village Gnieszowice, a religious marriage union was concluded between Franciszek Lis, bachelor, peasant, 24 years old, born and living in the village Gnieszowice, son of Kasper and Maryanna nee Oszczędłowska, and Maryanna Duma, maiden 17 years old, born and living in the village Gnieszowice, daughter of Wawrzyniec, already deceased, and Wiktoria nee Siudak. This marriage was preceded by three marriage banns in the church of the town Koprzywnica on January 25th and February 1st, 8th of the current year. The newlyweds stated that they did not conclude a prenuptial agreement. The religious wedding ceremony performed by priest Julian Wosinski.This act was read aloud to the illiterate present and then signed only by Us.

Marianna Duma‘s marriage record said she was the daughter of the late Wawrzyniec Duma and Wiktoria Siudak. Jadwiga and Marianna were sisters, so CK and RD are third cousins.

CK and RD‘s common ancestors were Wawrzeniec Duma and Wiktorya Siudak.

I was familiar with the Duma name, because in 2016, a Polish archeologist contacted me through my blog and shared his family history research. He is a descendant of Józef Duma, Marianna and Jadwiga Duma‘s cousin. He also posted his Duma family tree on Ancestry.com.

His trees also showed that Jadwiga and Maryanna Duma were sisters.

DNA Analysis

While we discovered how RD and CK are related to each other, we have not yet determined how RD and I are related.

RD and CK share 84 centiMorgans of DNA across three segments on chromosomes 9, 12, and 15. CK and I (SMP) share a 23.3 centiMorgan segment on chromosome 13. That is why the first chart above indicates “No” DNA overlap.

RD and SMP share 31 centiMorgans on chromosomes 7 and X. RD and TM share a 40 centiMorgan segment on chromosome 7. TM and SMP share 55 centiMorgans of DNA on chromosomes 1, 2, and 7. RD, TM, and SMP all overlap on chromosome 7.

TM‘s father and I are second cousins, so TM and I are second cousins one generation removed. Her great-grandmother Maryanna and my grandmother Agnieszka were sisters. I wrote about them:

Our shared DNA segment on chromosome 7 indicates that RD, TM, and my common ancestors were the ancestors of Wincenty Kapuściński or Marianna Witoń.

The small segment of the X chromosome RD and I share came from my maternal grandparents, probably from my grandmother Agnieszka Kapuścińska who was born in Gnieszowice near Koprzywnica. My father also passed on an X chromosome to me, but his mother’s family came from Szembruczek in north central Poland.

As a male, RD‘s father gave him a Y chromosome. His mother gave him an X chromosome from her parents Ewa Lis and/or Jan Piątek. Because RD and I share a 7.6 centiMorgans segment on chromosome X, our common ancestors are likely to be several generations back in or near Koprzywnica, Sandomierz County, Świętokrzyskie Voivodeship, Poland.
