Discovering our Ancestors' Travels and Travails

I have written previously about three young women–two sisters, Maryanna and Agnieszka Kapuścińska and their cousin Maryanna Witoń–born in Gnieszowice, Koprzywnica, Sandomierz, Radom, Congress Poland, Russia, who left their families to travel to Buffalo, New York, in 1912 and 1913.

Years ago, family members told me about a Pruś family connection to Maryanna and Agnieszka Kapuścińska. Recent DNA matches enabled me to research and write about the Pruś/Persh family in America and trace the connection in the old country.

Urszula Gach was born in Gnieszowice 20 October 1885 to Mateusz Gach and Julianna Kapuścińska and baptized in Koprzywnica, Sandomierz, Radom, Congress Poland, Russia.

Urszula Gach

Took place in the posad of Koprzywnica on 9/21 October 1885 at 5 o’clock in the afternoon. Appeared in person Mateusz Gach, a peasant, 30 years old, residing in the village of Gnieszowice, and in the presence of the witnesses Antoni Pyszczek, age 40, and Piotr Kolacz, age 45, both peasants, residing in Gnieszowice, he presented to Us a child of female sex stating that this child was born in the village of Gnieszowice yesterday at 11 o’clock in the night to his lawful wife Julianna, née Kapuścińska, 27 years old. At the Holy baptism performed on this day by priest Wincenty Krawczyński this child was given the name Urszula and her godparents were Antoni Oszczudlowski and Tekla Pyszczek. This act was read aloud to the illiterate people present and signed only by Us.

While Maryanna Witoń Solowski was the daughter of Maryanna and Agnieszka‘s mother’s brother Michał Witoń and Jadwiga Duma, Urszula Gach Pruś was the daughter of Maryanna and Agnieszka‘s father’s sister Julianna Kapuścińska and Mateusz Gach.
