Discovering our Ancestors' Travels and Travails

Stella Sue Skrok

The names used in official records can show an interesting story.

Born in 1931 and baptized Stanisława Zuzanna Skrok, our mother was called Staś or Stasia as a young girl. Another nickname used for Stanisława was Stella. When she applied for a Social Security number in October 1946, she used the name Stella Sue Skrok, and she signed her name “Stella Skrok.”

Unfortunately, Marlon Brando yelling “Hey Stella” in the film A Streetcar Named Desire in 1951 took away the name Stella’s appeal for Mom. After she married in 1954, she started signing formal documents “Estelle S. Maciejewski,” so when she needed an updated social security card in 1966, that’s the name she used.

In the next generation, the name Marcia lost its charm for our sister with one “Marcia, Marcia, Marcia” episode of The Brady Bunch in 1971, so she started using the name Macy Maciejewski.

Update: Stella used the name Estelle before her marriage. On 24 February 1954, “Marriage Licenses” in the Vital Statistics – Section III of the Buffalo Evening News listed

John Maciejewski, 80 Strauss, and Estelle Skrok, 209 Stanton.
