Discovering our Ancestors' Travels and Travails

A Safe Country

In 2022, Aleksander, Zenon, and the whole PolishOrigins Team sent a “Happy Thanksgiving from Poland” email message.

“We are also thankful for Poland being, after centuries of turmoil, wars and occupations, a safe country. Our parents lived under communism, our grandparents lived through World War II, and their grandparents lived during the partitions. Now we live in a free and democratic country that is a member of NATO and the EU and has its territory protected by international alliances and armed forces.”

Sadly, today the United Nations, the North Atlantic Treaty Organization, and European Union, and other alliances face threats from the leaders of the United States.

Our ancestors lived through turmoil and hardships. We are reminded not to take the blessings of peace and prosperity at home and abroad for granted. History teaches us if we heed the warnings. Democracy needs to be protected. I believe that ordinary citizens can collectively change the trajectory of history by speaking out early and often. Let your voice be heard in favor of freedom and democracy.

Yes, it can be risky. However, our family history research shows that we are descendants of people who have been willing to take risks. They did this hoping for a better life for themselves, their children, and their children’s children. Be brave, not despairing.
