Discovering our Ancestors' Travels and Travails

🇺🇦

Like many families with ancestry in central or eastern Europe, our family has relatives who are Ukrainian or have people in their family trees who were born in Ukraine. Some of them have tested their DNA and the results show we are related. Of those who included their homeland or the birthplaces of their relatives in family trees, I found hundreds of DNA relatives from 23andMe, MyHeritage, and AncestryDNA by searching for “Ukraine.” The list does not include all of our Ukrainian kin, because like Poland, the country of Ukraine did not exist for many years. Ancestors may have identified as Ruthenian, Jewish, or Lemko, from Galicia, (Austria-Hungary) or the Volhynia, Podolia, Kyiv, or other gubernia of the Russian Empire. It is a complicated history.

The national anthem of Poland is “Poland Has Not Yet Perished.”

The national anthem of Ukraine is “Glory and Freedom of Ukraine Has Not Yet Perished.”

Nay, thou art not dead, Ukraine, see, thy glory’s born again,
And the skies, O brethren, upon us smile once more!
As in Springtime melts the snow, so shall melt away the foe,
And we shall be masters in our own home.

Poetic English translation of Ukrainian lyrics

“Слава Україні! Героям слава!” is an Ukrainian national salute. In Roman letters, it is “Slava Ukraini! Heroiam slava!” You can hear it spoken here by clicking on the speaker icon on the Ukrainian side.

In English, we say, “Glory to Ukraine! Glory to the heroes!”
