My Family History Research

My mother had just turned five years old when her father Jan Skrok died 15 May 1936 in Buffalo, Erie, New York. While her mother was taking care of things in the city, she stayed for a time with with her father’s Rzepka cousins on their farm near Batavia, Genesee, New York.

The name Rzepka is the Polish word for “kneeecap.”

I wrote about the “1883 Marriage of Ignacy Rzepka and Małgorzata Skrok” and the oldest Rzepka daughter, Maryanna Rzepka Szczepańska, in “My Mother’s Szczepański Cousins.”

Mary Ann Rzepka Szczepanski‘s death notice in the Buffalo Evening News said she was the sister of John and Walter Rzepka. She was predeceased by two other brothers–Franciszek (Frank) in 1930 and Stanisław (Stanley) in 1955.

Franciszek “Frank” Rzepka (1893-1930)

Franciszek Rzepka was born on 23 March 1893 in Kaliszany and baptized at Kościół pw. Św. Wojciecha Biskupa i Męczennika in Wojciechowice, Opatów, Radom, Congress Poland, Russia.

He was also known as Frank Rzepka.

Frank Rzepka served in the United States Army in World War I.

Frank Rzepka was listed as a boarder of Józef Szczepański in the 1920 census at Amherst Street in Buffalo, Erie, New York. He was naturalized in 1922 in Buffalo, Erie, New York. Frank Rzepka died on 7 Aug 1930 at the age of 37 in Buffalo, Erie, New York. He was buried on 9 Aug 1930 at Pine Hill Cemetery in Buffalo, Erie, New York.

A death notice was printed 8 August 1930 in Dziennik dla Wszystkich, “Everybody’s Daily,” the Buffalo, New York, Polish daily newspaper from 1911 to 1957.

Franciszek Rzepka‘s death notice said he died suddenly, and left behind to mourn were his wife Domicela, his brothers Stanisław, Jan, and Władysław, and his sister, Marya Szczepańska.

Franciszek Rzepka and Domicela Bednarowska were married in January 1922 in Buffalo, Erie, New York. Domicela Bednarowska was born about 1893. She immigrated on 5 Aug 1912 to New York, New York, United States on the ship Lapland from Antwerp, Belgium. She was also known as Domicela Rzepka. Domicela lived at 69 Mills Street in Buffalo, Erie, New York in 1933. On 9 Nov 1935 she married Wawrzeniec Lukawski. Domicela Lukawski died on 20 Nov 1964 at Black Rock in Buffalo, Erie, New York.

Stanisław “Stanley” Rzepka (1887-1955)

Stanisław Rzepka was born on 6 January 1887 in Kaliszany, Wojciechowice, Opatów, Radom, Congress Poland, Russia. Stanislaw Rzepka arrived at Ellis Island at the port of New York 30 April 1912. He had sailed from Antwerp, Belgium on the SS Finland on 20 April 1912. He is listed as 25, male, single, citizen of Russia, Polish race, last residence Russia Kaliszany. His next of kin was his father, Ignacy Rzepka, of Kaliszany, Radom, and his final destination was Buffalo, New York. He had a ticket to his final destination, passage was paid by himself, he had money, had not been in US before, and was going to join his brother-in-law Joseph Szczepański in Buffalo. He was 5’8″, and born in Kaliszany, Russia. He was also known as Stanley Rzepka.

The family lived at 24 Gittere Street in Buffalo in 1920. Stanisław was a flour miller. He was naturalized on 8 February 1928. Stanley Rzepka died on 7 Feb 1955 at Jerusalem Road in Eden, Erie, New York. He was buried at Eden Evergreen Cemetery in Eden, Erie, New York.

Stanisław Rzepka and Maria Lisiecka were married on 1 Mar 1916 at St. Stanislaus RC Church in Buffalo, Erie, New York. They lived on Reed Street in Buffalo, Erie, New York. Maria Lisiecka, daughter of Jan Lisiecki and Lucia Bednarkiewicz, was born on 2 January 1887 in Wydzierzewice, Kostrzyn, Posen, Preussen. Mary Rzepka was naturalized on 7 Nov 1960 at District Court in Buffalo, Erie, New York. Maria died on 8 June 1975 at the age of 88 in Eden, Erie, New York and was buried on 11 June 1975 at Eden Evergreen Cemetery in Eden, Erie, New York.

MRS. STANLEY RZEPKA
Services were held in the David C. Laing Funeral Home. Eden, on June 11 for Mrs. Mary Lisienski Rzepka of Jerusalem Rd., Eden, who died June 8 in her 83rd year. Daniel J. Bierer officiated with burial in Evergreen Cemetery.
The widow of the late Stanlev Rzepka, she leaves a daughter, Mrs. Pearl Kiec of Eden and a granddaughter, Lillian Kiec. Mrs. Rzepka was also the grandmother of the late Daniel Kiec.

Stanisław Rzepka and Maria Lisiecka were the parents of Pelagia A. Rzepka, born 12 Jan 1917, Buffalo, Erie, New York. She was called Pearl, and married Jan A. Kiec, on 28 Sep 1940, Buffalo, Erie, New York. Pearl Kiec died 5 Feb 2008 in Alden, Erie, New York.

Jan “John” Rzepka (1890-1969)

Jan Rzepka was born on 14 July 1890 in Kaliszany and baptized at Kościół pw. Św. Wojciecha Biskupa i Męczennika in Wojciechowice, Opatów, Radom, Congress Poland, Russia.

Jan Rzepka arrived at Ellis Island at the port of New York 29 August 1910. He sailed from Antwerp, Belgium on the SS Vaderland. He was listed as 20, male, single, citizen of Russia, Polish race, last residence Russia Kaliszany.

Jan Rzepka and Salomea Zielińska were married on 31 January 1912 in Buffalo, Erie, New York. They lived at 76 Milburn Street about 1917.

In 1920, Jan and Salomea Rzepka lived at 32 Cochrane Street in Buffalo, Erie, New York. The family returned to Poland. Jan Rzepka’s Wife and Children Returned to America in 1925. In 1930 and 1940 the family lived on Upton Road in Batavia, Genesee, New York.

Salomea Zielińska, daughter of Marcin and Petronela Zieliński, was born on 9 June 1883 in Preußen, Prussia (Germany-Poland). Her family immigrated on 30 July 1884 to New York, New York. The Zieliński family lived at 67 Houghton Street in Buffalo, Erie, New York in 1900. In 1910, they lived at 51 Swinburne Street in Buffalo, Erie, New York. Salomea was also known as Sarah or “Sadie” Rzepka. She died on 11 November 1959 at the age of 76 in Batavia, Genesee, New York. She was buried on 14 November 1959 at St. Stanislaus Bishop and Martyr Roman Catholic Cemetery in Cheektowaga, Erie, New York.

The Late Mrs. Rzepka
Services for Mrs. John Rzepka Sr. of the Upton Rd., who died Wednesday morning (Nov. 11, 1959) at St. Jerome Hospital, will be at 10 a. m. Saturday at the J. T. Swatowski ‘Funeral Home, 1086 Walden Ave., Buffalo, and at 10:30 at St. John Gualbert Church in Buffalo. Interment will be in St. Stanislaus Cemetery, Pine Hill.
Mrs. Rzepka, the former Sarah Zielinski, was born in Poland, June 9, 1889, daughter of the late Martin and Petronela Zielinski. She had been a resident of this area for 30 years. She was a member of Sacred Heart Church.
Surviving, besides her husband, are three daughters, Mrs. Walter Eckhart of Buffalo, Mrs. Walter Brzezniak of the Rose Rd., and Mrs. Steven Woods of Miami, Fla.; a son, John W. of the Upton Rd.; a sister, Mrs. Mary Borzyc of Buffalo, 10 grandchildren, and a great grandchild.
Friends may call at the funeral home.

• Leona Rzepka, born 22 March 1921, Buffalo, Erie, New York; married Stephen Frank Zakrzewski, May 1942 (Steve Woods); she died 19 Mar 1981, Miami, Dade, Florida. I match a few of her descendants with DNA.

John Rzepka died on 6 April 1969 at the age of 78 in Buffalo, Erie, New York. He was buried at St. Stanislaus Bishop and Martyr Roman Catholic Cemetery in Cheektowaga, Erie, New York.

Władysław “Walter” Rzepka (1896-1983)

Władysław Rzepka was born on 7 February 1896 in Kaliszany and baptized at Kościół pw. Św. Wojciecha Biskupa i Męczennika in Wojciechowice, Opatów, Radom, Congress Poland, Russia.

Władysław Rzepka immigrated on 2 April 1913 to New York, New York, on the ship President Grant from Hamburg, with a final destination of Buffalo, New York. On 16 November 1914, Walter Rzepka, a farmer, (fair complexion, five feet seven inches, 170 pounds, blonde hair, hazel eyes, no visible distinctive marks) declared his intention to renounce allegiance to Nicholas II, Emperor of all Russias in the US District Court in the Western District of New York.

Walter J. Rzepka enlisted on 1 March 1917 in the United States Army in Buffalo, Erie, New York. He was slightly injured in Pershing’s Army 4 May 1918. Walter was discharged on 21 October 1919.

Walter Joseph Rzepka was naturalized on 3 March 1919 in Buffalo, Erie, New York, United States.

Walter Rzepka was included as the brother of John Rzepka in the in 1920 census at 32 Cochrane Street in Buffalo, Erie, New York and in the 1930 census in Batavia, Genesee, New York. In 1942, Walter Joseph Rzepka lived in Parkland, Douglas, Wisconsin.

Władysław Rzepka and Mary Magdalene Gołębiewska were married. In 1940 they lived on Ruck Street in Spooner, Washburn, Wisconsin. Mary Magdalene Gołębiewska, daughter of Władysław and Franciszka Gołębiewski, was born on 24 Apr 1892 in Winnetka, Cook, Illinois. She had been previously married.

Mary Magdalene Gołębiewska and Alfred Montanaro were married on 23 Jun 1913 in Hubbard Woods, Cook, Illinois. Alfred Montanaro, son of Michael Montanaro and Maria Gerardi, was born on 28 May 1894 in Germantown, Columbia, Pennsylvania.

Walter Rzepka and Mary Magdalene Gołębiewska were the parents of Jacqueline Rzepka, born April 1934, in Wisconsin. She married Ronald Marius Harris, son of Lester Anthony Harris and Marion O. Berg. She later married Raymond Santiwan.

Mary Rzepka died, killed by a car, on 8 Dec 1941 at the age of 49 in Spooner, Washburn, Wisconsin, United States. She was buried at Calvary Cemetery in Spooner, Washburn, Wisconsin.

Walter Rzepka moved to Hawaii where he was involved in the management of U.S. military golf courses. Walter Rzepka died February 1983 at the age of 87 at Tripler Army Medical Center in Haleiwa, Honolulu, Hawaii and was buried on 24 February 1983 at National Memorial Cemetery Of The Pacific in Honolulu, Honolulu, Hawaii.

Walter Rzepka married Deloris Ann Hyrne, mother of John Hyrne (born June 1930). Deloris Ann Sieger was born on 27 Jan 1912 in Pennsylvania, United States. Deloris Rzepka died on 4 Dec 1984 and was buried in Honolulu, Honolulu, Hawaii, next to her husband.

Records in Wojciechowice, Opatów, show that Ignacy Rzepka and Malgorzata Skrok were the parents of two daughters in Kaliszany who did not immigrate to the United States.
