My Family History Research

As a child I was always meeting relatives. The adults were all called aunt and uncle, and my interest in family history started decades ago in trying to figure out the relationships. It was confusing with the Wroński family, because I was related to Edmund and Stella Solowski Wronski‘s family on my mother’s mother’s side and Stanley and Josephine Wronski Szczepanski‘s family on my mother’s father’s side. My father’s mother had been born Marya Szczepańska, and we had Szczepanski cousins on my father’s side! When I asked, my mother would tell me, “we’re cousins.”

When I started researching family history in the 1990s, my mother obligingly called and we wrote older relatives to answer my questions about descendants in America. I put together family trees based on what people told me, and shared them with my relatives. More recently I have accessed online records in the United States and Poland to more accurately tell the family stories.

Skrok, Rzepka, Szczepański, and Wrońska

My grandfather John Skrok‘s cousin’s son Stanley Szczepanski married Josephine Wronska in Buffalo, Erie, New York, on 21 Nov 1936.

Stanley Szczepanski was the son of Józef Szczepański and Maryanna Rzepka. Józef and Maryanna had married in the old country (Russia occupied Poland) 12 Oct 1903 in Wojciechowice, Opatów, near Sandomierz, and came to Buffalo, New York, with their daughter Anna about 1909.

Maryanna‘s mother, Małgorzata Skrok, was my grandfather’s aunt, so Stanley and my mother were second cousins.

My grandmother Agnes Kapuścińska Skrok Kiec‘s cousin’s daughter Stella Solowski married Edmund Wronski in Buffalo, Erie, New York, on 23 Jun 1947.

Stella Solowski was the daughter of Józef Solowski and Maryanna Witoń. Józef and Maryanna were married in Buffalo on 26 Jan 1915.

Maryanna‘s father, Michał Witoń, was my grandmother’s uncle, so Stella and my mother were second cousins.

Wroński Families

Josephine Wronski Szczepanski and Edmund Wronski were siblings. Their parents were Tomasz Stanisław Wroński and Julianna Mielczarska.

Tomasz Wroński came to America first. He arrived in New York 7 Sep 1910 on the ship Uranium from New Rotterdam, the Netherlands. He left behind his wife Julia Wrońska in Aleksandrów and was going to his brother-in-law Franciszek Mielczarski in Detroit, Michigan. Tomasz‘ place of birth was listed as Checina, Russia.

Frank Mielczarski‘s WWII draft registration said he had been born in Aleksandrów Kujawski. When he died in 1946 in Detroit, his father’s name was listed as Joseph.

Julianna Wrońska and four daughters–Stanisława, Marya, Stefania, and Janina–arrived 13 Nov 1912 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, on the ship Breslau from Bremen, Germany. She left her sister behind and was joining her husband and the children’s father Tomasz Wroński in Buffalo, New York.

The family had more children–Edmund, Józefa, and Helena–in Buffalo, Erie, New York.

Family of Thomas and Julia Wronski

Tomasz Wronski declared his intention to become a United States citizen on 17 Apr 1916. He registered for the United States draft in 1918.

In 1920, Thomas and Julia Wronski and their family lived on a farm in Evans, Erie, New York. Thomas was a machinist on the railroad.

Thomas must have spent some time with his brother’s family in the city, because he also was listed in the 1920 census with Walter and Caroline Wronski at 19 Schmarbeck Street in Buffalo, Erie, New York.

By 1930, Thomas and Julia had purchased their home at 131 Krupp Street in Buffalo, Erie, New York.

On 16 July 1936, the Buffalo Polish Newspaper Dziennik dla Wszystkich reported on page 3, column 3, that Mr. and Mrs. Tomasz and Julianna Wroński were celebrating their 41st wedding anniversary. It listed their daughters Stanisława, Marjanna, Stefanje, Janina, Józefa, and Helena, and a son, Edmund. Wrońscy is the plural form or Wroński.

Thomas Wronski applied for a Social Security number in February 1937, listing his father’s name as Marcin Wronski and his mother’s name as Maryanna Znojek. His place of birth was listed as Hancien Woje, Poland.

1937 Thomas Wronski U. S. Social Security abstract

The Wronski family was joined at 131 Krupp Street by Josephine‘s husband Stanley Szczepanski after their marriage in 1936.

While they had been listed together up to 1942, in the 1953 Buffalo, New York, city directory, Mrs. Julia Wronski was listed without her husband at 131 Krupp Street. She continued to be listed that way in subsequent directories. In the 1956 city directory, Thomas Wronski was listed at 8 Empire Street in Buffalo, Erie, New York. I was told, years ago, that Thomas returned to Poland and died in 1969, at the age of 96.

Julia Wronska died 11 Nov 1963. The funeral was at St. John Kanty Church and she was buried at St. Stanislaus Cemetery in Cheektowaga, Erie, New York. Although Stanley Szczepanski had died in 1957, some family members returned to the church and cemetery the following day, for the funeral of his sister Katherine Manka.

I was asked about the Wroński cousins from Titus Street in Buffalo. It’s always interesting to check out siblings, because they have clues to shared heritage, such as a common place, Aleksandrów, for the Mielczarski siblings, or a family name, Znojek, which is most often reported in the present day Świętokrzyskie Province of Poland.

Tomasz Wroński‘s brother Władisław Wroński and Władisław‘s future wife Karolina Znojek immigrated to America on the ship President Grant from Hamburg, Germany, with a final destination of Lackawanna, New York. They arrived in New York on 29 May 1913.

When Walter Wronski died in 1969, his obituary in the Buffalo Courier Express, Buffalo, New York, 10 November 1969, page 32 listed:

WALTER WRONSKI Walter Wronski, 83, of 42 Titus St., a retired painting contractor, died Sunday afternoon in his home. Mr. Wronski, who retired in 1957, operated his business from the Titus St. address for 50 years. He was a member of the Polish Mutual Aid Society, the ZNA Society 206. and the Polish National Alliance 168. A widower, Mr. Wronski is survived by a son, Matthew, of Las Vegas, Nev., five daughters, Mrs. Casimer Rzeszot, Mrs. Joseph Poinewierski, Mrs. Henry Wojciechowski, Mrs. William Czuprynski and Mrs. Joseph Kisc, and grandchildren and great-grandchildren. A Requiem Mass will be celebrated at St. John Kanty’s Church, Broadway and Swinburne, at 10 a.m. Thursday. Burial will be in St. Stanislaus Cemetery, Cheektowaga.

WRONSKI-Walter, of Titus Ave, Nov. 9, 1969, husband of the late Karolina; beloved father of Charlotte (Joseph) Poniewierski, Phyllis (Casimer) Rzeszot, Laura (Henry) Wojciechowskl; Matthew (Mary) Wronski of Las Vegas, Nevada; Adele (William) Czuprynski; Sabina (Joseph) Kish and the late Wanda Pudlewski. Also survived by sisters and brother in Poland, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Funeral Thursday at 9:30 a.m. from St. John’s Funeral Home. 1456 Broadway, corner Koons Ave., and at 10 a.m. at St. John Canitius Church. Friends Invited. Deceased was a member of the Holy Name Society, Polish Mutual Aid Society, Polish National Alliance No. 168 Z. N. P. Group No. 206 and the Broadway Belt Line Home Owners Association. Family will be present from 2-10 p.m.

As these families assimilated in America, the nasal sounding “ń“s in the names Szczepański, Mańka, Witoń, and Wroński lost their accent. The Polish language custom of differentiating masculine (-ski) and feminine (-ska) last names was left behind. Stanisław used the name Stanislaus or Stanley. Władisław was Ladislaus in some records and Walter in others. Stanisława was called Stasia or Stella. Władisława grew up to use the name Lottie or Charlotte. Leokadia called herself Laura, and Mieczysław became Matthew.

DNA evidence has confirmed my connection to descendants of Maryanna Witoń and Józef Solowski, including a direct descendant of Tomasz Wroński and Julianna Mielczarska. I have a DNA match to a direct descendant of Maryanna Rzepka and Józef Szczepański, as well as multiple DNA matches to other descendants of Małgorzata Skrok and Ignacy Rzepka. Lastly, although I am not related to the descendants of Władisław Wroński and Karolina Znojek, we have cousins in common!

Updated January 2021 to include a DNA match to a direct descendant of Maryanna Rzepka and Józef Szczepański with 23andMe. It’s interesting to note that 23andMe “Relatives in Common” include people I match from both Rzepka/Szczepański and Witoń/Solowski descendants.
